Kiss Cafe: A Sweet Surprise!
Kiss Cafe: A Sweet Surprise! Kiss Cafe - 2400 Boston Street - Canton - 410.327.9889
For the first time in this column’s relatively short history, we visited an existing dinner spot that we have already been to (rehabs and ownership changes aside). However, we had not been there for dinner. In the case of Kiss Café, we had been there plenty of times between the two of us- but only for breakfast.
I’ll be the first to admit I wrongly stereotyped Kiss Café as a breakfast joint, even though during their nearly seven year existence at The Can Company in Canton, I knew they had a bar, hosted weekly evening tango lessons, and apparently throw one heck of an annual New Year’s Eve party. Once we arrived, it didn’t take me long to realize I wasn’t going to be throwing down their breakfast burrito. My bad.
We strolled into Kiss Café on a pleasant Tuesday evening. We chose a table inside, but their outside seating is a perfect place to people and traffic watch along Boston Street. The inside has that ‘Modern Warehouse’ feel: tall, exposed ceilings, plenty of space, and lots of windows supplying light.
We were taken care of all evening by the extremely personable manager, Shannon Robinson, who also doubled as our server. She promised to take us on quite the culinary stroll. She did not lie.
We started with, appropriately enough, Shannon’s Summer Salad ($7.95). The menu says “Spring” salad, so maybe we heard that wrong. Or, maybe it then becomes “Shannon’s Fall Salad” in a few months. You’ll have to clarify that on your own. Regardless, it was quite refreshing (has a salad ever been called “refreshing?”). It was a mixed green salad tossed with Balsamic Vinaigrette, blue cheese, red onions, strawberries, blueberries, and walnuts. The addition of the berries ultimately gave the salad that “refreshing” quality.
Next, was the Beef Wrap-N-Roll ($8.95), sliced pinwheels of rib eye with lettuce, tomato, and onion wrapped in a tortilla, and served with a side of sweetened citrus mayonnaise. I’m not sure what was better, the pinwheels or the mayo. We think you’ll find both equally tasty.
Our entrée was the Princess Lobster, or from the sound of it, the “special so popular it has become a regular special” ($16.95). This item is a lobster tail topped with crab imperial, and it comes with two sides – we had the rice and an excellent mix of zucchini, squash, and peppers.
We finished off the evening with two desserts, the Cake Batter Cheesecake and the Rocky Mountain Fudgecake. Both were fine, but the latter, served warm with - I don’t know, some type of chocolate drizzle delight - was the bomb. I’ll give you our signature, “Order the Rocky Mountain Fudgecake, Seriously” advice right here, courtesy of Erin. I choose to tell you to order the Princess Lobster. There is really no dilemma - order them both.
Before, we wrap it up, back to the top. Yes, Kiss Café still remains a prime breakfast choice, and it’s served until 4pm daily. They can fix you up with breakfast sammies, burritos, and omelets, and are able to supply you with the full array of hot and iced beverages (lattes, mochas, etc).
For lunch and dinner, Kiss Café has the full compliment of salads - buffalo, Asian, salmon, Greek - to name a few - in the $7 to $10 range. And, they carry all types of appetizers – calamari, quesadillas, southern sweet potato fries and homemade guacamole, to name few - in the $4 to $10 range. They begin serving burgers and sandwiches at 11 am and entrees (fish, chicken, steak, pasta) at 5pm.
What we learned here was this: we had an outstanding dinner for a very reasonable price. Kiss Café did not disappoint. And, we dispelled our preconceived notion about what this place does well. We realize now that Kiss Café isn’t just for breakfast anymore.
