Natty Boh Winks in Approval!

Keeping watch over the Brewer’s Hill and Canton waterfront is none other than the famous Mr. Boh, the National Bohemian mascot, in all of his neon glory.  And what gives life to this character is his occasional winking, something we’ve been sure to point out to those not in the know.  If you can find the Boh guy, then you can venture right down the street and the ode to his likeness, Winks Hill Top Grill (834 S. Conkling Street).

We only knew one thing about Winks before entering, that it is one of those few places around (that we know of) that is suitable for BYOB.  Wink’s owner, Joey Mitchem, pointed out that they are about a year away from a liquor license, so you’ll have to bring your own until then.  Who has a problem with that?  Not us.  Surely neighborhood cruise director Rob Sharkey is full of glee after reading that, too.

Formerly the Conkling Street Grill, Winks undertook a full rehab and opened a year ago, and it shows: a shiny new bar, exposed brick, and new… everything.  Two things jumped out at us about Winks.  First, this place had a pleasant and laid back feel.  The menu even stated, “No loud or vulgar language,” and thus a mellow meal will await you.  You might choose to sit at the bar or a high-top table and watch the game, or relax at a table under dimmed mood lighting and music.  We chose a table by the window, which is perfect for people-watching, especially once spring has sprung.

We were also roused by the reasonable prices, not always easy to find in the city. They offered appetizers ($6 - 9), subs and sandwiches ($7 - 9), and array of salads, soups and sides. For the dinner appetite, options include pasta, gourmet pizzas, and a variety of entrees, which all fall in the $9 - $20 range.

Erin started off our meal with a cup of French Onion Soup, and I went with the Tuna Bites ($8.95).  I was presented with a generous portion of rare blackened tuna pieces accompanied by a cup of homemade horseradish sauce.  Its here I’d like to use my new catch phrase: Order It.  Seriously.

We went from here and dove straight into a few entrees. I ordered the New York Strip entree ($17.95), with sides of mashed potatoes and "giant" broccoli (it was giant to me). Erin, never one to shy away from pasta, had the Chicken Parmigiana ($14.95) served over spaghetti, but she didn't get to close to conquering the large plate of food she received. I always consider it a win when I enjoy a big meal and still have enough for lunch the next day.

We left Winks Hill Top Grill stomachs full and my wallet only took a light hit. And it was nice to be in a quiet spot after mutual long days at work. And before we got in the car, Mr.Boh and his handlebar moustache seemed to wink in approval.
